The Europeans are coming!!

European contact Contact occurred over a period of 200 years “Contact” was from about 1500 to1700 Christopher Columbus arrived first in 1492 Columbus wasn’t REALLY first… but I digress Contact had a major impact on both Europeans and Native Americans

Europe before contact Tension between Catholics and Protestants French = Catholic & English = Protestant Trade was also important Sailed to Asia to trade Columbus had the idea of sailing West and “discovered” the Americas Others soon followed

John Cabot

1497- John Cabot Sailed to “New Found Land” in 1497 Found fish. A lot of fish = big $$$ Fish was important for Christians He returned to Europe and told of his find Many people thought he had made it all the way to Asia The next year he set sail with 5 ships, but disappeared

Jacques Cartier

1534- Jacques Cartier Cartier was hired to explore the East coast He was to find a passage to Asia He had brief friendly encounters with Natives (mostly Mi’kmaq) Further in the coast he also met with Iroquois On June 24 th 1534 he “claimed” the land for France and kidnapped 2 sons of a Chief

Cartier Cont… He took his captives back to Europe promising to return them the following year In 1535 he returned with three ships This time sailed further inland Still could not find a route to Asia Wintered in 1535 Almost died, but had help from Natives

Cartier Cont… May Cartier kidnaps Donnaconna (Iroquois Chief) and his sons and some kids Donnaconna meets Francis I (French King) All captives but 1 die in France sent back to re-establish settlement Set up trade & convert Natives to Catholicism Doesn’t receive a warm welcome Establishes new settlement: Charlesbourg- Royal First European settlement in Canada
