Voyage One Date: 1534 He had a cross erected on the on the site of Gaspe to mark that he had claimed the land in the name of the King He failed to find riches He made first contact with the aboriginals, some of who were taken back to France

Voyage Two Date: 1535 He explored and mapped the St. Lawrence river, leading him to believe he found a route to Asia He reached Hochelaga (Montreal) and spent the winter in Stadacona (Quebec). Voyage Three Date: 1541 Main objectives o To establish a colony (populate and Develop New France) o Evangelize the natives Cartier thought he had discovered gold and diamonds, but he found out it was actually pyrite & quartz He failed to set up a settlement colony because: o The harsh climate and long voyage discouraged French people from settling in New France o Cartier and Roberval could not agree on important decisions o Disagreements between the natives and the French o France was preoccupied with the wars in Europe
