CHOOSING AN EXERCISE ACTIVITY

Target: I will be able to identify what a person should consider before beginning a fitness program Pg. 41 Physical activity that is part of your daily routine or recreation that promotes good health for a lifetime.

Types of Exercises 1. Aerobic Exercises: vigorous activity in which oxygen is continuously taken in for at least 20 minutes. It sends more oxygen to the muscles and improves cardiorespiratory endurance and body composition

2. Anaerobic Exercises: Exercise in which the muscles work so hard that they produce energy without requiring oxygen. 3. Resistance Training: Any exercise that causes the muscles to contract against an external resistance to improve strength, tone, mass, and/or endurance.

Resistance Training Exercises: (Anaerobic)  Isometric Exercises: Muscle strengthening exercise in which you tighten a muscle with no body movement at the joint. Ex: Planks; hand press

 Isotonic Exercises: Exercise in which muscles contract and move against a resistance repeatedly. Exs: push-ups, pull-ups, and weight lifting

 Isokinetic Exercises: Exercise that uses weight- resistance machines to provide resistance through the full range of motion. Ex: Lat Pulldown, Bicep Curls, Calf Press, etc.

When Choosing a Physical Activity 1. Don’t limit yourself to just one activity 2. Choose a variety of activities Cross Training: Combining different exercise routines to help work different body systems. Contributes to total fitness- The more muscle and joints you work the greater the total health gain Less boredom- Variety develops your overall health Helps prevent injury- Variety allows different parts of your body to rest and recover Summary

MY EXERCISE OF CHOICE Pg. 41 Since not limiting yourself to only one type of exercise is important… Divide you paper into 3 sections and draw pictures of your three go-to exercises. Identify whether it is Aerobic or Anaerobic. Then explain why a variety of exercises is important to your total health. *Use a minimum of 4 colors*
