Trans-Neptunian objects = celestial objects beyond Neptune

What exists beyond Neptune? Kuiper Belt - a region of the solar system beyond the orbit of Neptune containing small objects that orbit the sun Oort cloud - a massive cloud of icy debris beyond Pluto (50, ,000 AU from the Sun) Both contain materials left over from the formation of the solar system – think about the dust that remains at the edges of a room after sweeping it

Pluto = Dwarf Planet What are the criteria of a dwarf planet? – large enough to be round – orbit the sun – have no clear path Since Pluto overlaps with Neptune’s orbit, it is now considered a dwarf planet Most dwarf planets are trans- Neptunian objects = beyond Neptune’s orbit (usually in the Kuiper belt) Exception: Ceres – found in asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter
