Problem Solving This is difficult for individuals with autism spectrum and similar social-cognitive problems Requires that you attend to another person’s reactions Involves thinking of all the options and choosing a good plan Involves “thinking on your feet”

Examples of social problems Who gets to be first? Who gets to choose? Who gets to make up the rules? When should you say “I’m sorry”? Why should you say “I’m sorry”? How do you know if another person is upset with you?

Social Problem Solving Difficult for most of us. Particularly difficult for individuals on the spectrum because by definition they are confused by people around them. Frustration and confusion can lead to high levels of anxiety.

Skills Needed to Solve Social Problems An understanding of another person’s perspective. An understanding of another person’s motivation. An understanding of the importance of getting along with others.
