True or false? 1.Psychology is a Science. 2.Young mammals have distinctive facial features that act as a trigger for parenting. 3.Infants have an innate (inborn) desire to attach to someone. 4.Baby monkeys prefer a comforting mother figure to a figure which provides food. 5.Japanese babies are less likely to get upset when separated from their mother than Western babies. 6.Later relationships in life are not influenced by our early relationships with our mother. 7.People who had insecure attachments with their mother are more likely to fall in love easily but have trouble finding “true love”. 8.A child who was locked in a room until she was 13 by her father fully recovered following her rescue. 9.Children raised in institutions (e.g. orphanages) are usually physically small. 10.There is a strong link between the hours spent in day care and levels of aggressive behaviour.

Why is attachment important? For survival For emotional health of child For everyday activities e.g. feeding and playing

How do we know 2 people have an attachment? Seek proximity Distress in separation Joy on reunion Direct attention towards each other

Interactional synchrony EbZht0 EbZht0 What is the research method? What is the IV? What is the DV? What is the design?

Evaluation A limitation of this research is that it is mostly based on observations of mothers and infants. Observations are based on expression and movement and it is difficult to interpret what is taking place from the infant’s perspective and whether imitation is deliberate or conscious. This means that we cannot know that behaviours we observe have the special meaning we assume they do.

Evaluation A further limitation of this research is that it doesn’t tell us about the purpose of reciprocity and interactional synchrony. For example, they simply describe behaviours that happen at the same time. This means that the observations don’t tell us the reason the behaviours occur and we can only infer this from the research.

Tasks Match the stages of attachment to the descriptions Fill in the APFC of the Schaffer and Emerson study
