Arctic Native Americans By Caralyn Cleaver

Names Of Tribes I am concentrating most on the Inuit tribe. But these are the rest anyway. Eskimos Inuit Yupik Alvtiiq Aleut Dorset Inupiat Nganasan Here are some tribes of the North West Region…( note: not all of them) Cowlitz S'Klallam Indians Lower Elwha klallam Lummi nation Makah Muckle shoot Nisqually Nooksack Port gamble S’Klallam Puyallup Quileute Quinault Samish nation

Geography/ Geology There were mountain chains in the Arctic oceans, and rivers. These are some of the kinds of places they would live on. They lived by the ocean. They lived on… islands, waterways, sandy shorelines, protected coves and bays, wet-land marshes, flat areas, by rivers and lakes, forests, and stuff like that !!!

Climate Mild summers, and very cold winters. It snowed a lot there. (like at least 2 ft. a week!) The climate is pretty weird if you ask me unlike the Inuit's on the cold side!!! 50 inches of rainfall each year!!! It rarely gets very hot or very cold.

Resources( Plants/Animals)  My favorite animal that they had in the Arctic region was the arctic fox! ( there is a picture of it on this slide try to find it!)  Caribou Snowy owl Arctic wolf Polar bear Ptarmigan Arctic hare Arctic fox Weasel Vole Plants Tundra Arctic willow Arctic poppy The people of the North West region have very many plants and animals to eat or to use as pack animals, such as… They used seagull feathers for pillows and blankets. They ate Clams, Geo-ducks, and Oysters. Raccoon( think hats and you will get the picture!) Trout is one of the many fish they both ate and would eat. (ha ha ha tricked you!!!!!!! HA!!) Plants… Skunk cabbage( smells bad but looks good!!!) Bulbs (for flowers) Cedar trees( for …homes, clothes, and hats

Shelter Tents that are made from seal skin. Igloos are made with a hole in the top Igloos are made out of ice. Igloos are built near the seashores. Whale ribs support the top of the Igloos. The North West people made cedar plank houses to live and sleep in. They also lived in long houses.

Food They would hunt and kill seals caribou walruses, and whales. They also collected Arctic berries. The north west native Americans would kill these animals and would also ate plants. Fish like… trout, and salmon Berries like… salmon berries, sallal berries, strawberries, blackberries, and many more!!! Wild carrots( They think they are very yummy to my tummy) Nuts( such as acorns ) A Wapato is a wild potato that the north west native Americans would harvest.

Transportation Umiaks( it is a small canoe for rivers) Kayaks I am sure you all know what a kayak is. A Kamotak is a wide open boat that is used when the Inuits go into the deeper waters. I am pretty sure you know what a canoe is. The only transportation used in the north west region is, (not very much if you ask me) Canoes. They made the canoes themselves.( very talented if you ask me) By foot( in other words they walked to places.)

Other Interesting Facts Inuits had to wear seal skin in the summer. The inuits made pictures by, engraving images in Ivory, then they would cover it with lamp black. The inuit people would carve goggles out of wood that would serve as snow glasses because the snow is so bright. Soap-box cooking pots. The inuit people also made knives out of wood, Ivory, and stone. Soap stone oil lamp. They had knives for women. They did throat sayings. The men would spear the salmon as they swam down-stream. Animal skin was used for extra warmth. The north west people wore dome shaped hats when necessary to shed the rain. They made digging tools from animal horns.

The End This could be the end of my studying, But not the end of your questioning. Good bye now!
