Scenario You are going to design and create a 45 second audio clip using Audacity You are going to promote a competition, an event, local business or a new product on a local radio station

Designing your radio advert You should have planned the purpose and audience of your audio clip and sourced your chosen files You need to now produce a storyboard showing different details of the planned clip that is to be created The storyboard should show the planned content of the audio clip, the timeline, where you intend to use silencing and fading, the volume settings and special effects

Task 2 – Creating a storyboard Before creating your storyboard you need to decide upon the sequence of the source components and what editing you will carry out Make brief notes about your initial ideas and your planned edits and effects Your storyboard should be in enough detail for someone else to be able to create your clip

What it should show: The Planned Content The Timeline Volume Higher Levels Editing Creating a Storyboard

The Planned Content Show what components will be included and how you will combine and play each component You should display the filename, the type of component (music, sound or speech) and the file type of the component on your storyboard

The Timeline This is a chronological display of all the components that will be used in your audio clip The timeline must show the duration in seconds of each component (i.e. how long each track will play once you have edited it) It is also useful to show on the storyboard the length of the original source file

Volume In an audio clip it is common to play more than one sound at the same time e.g. music can be played continuously behind other sounds such as speech and sound effects If you intend to play two sounds together, you should show on your storyboard which sound should be played louder and which one quieter

Editing Special Effects – these are the editing techniques that change the sound of a selected part of an audio track Cut – a selection of track to be removed and store in on the clipboard. It can be pasted in a new track or elsewhere in the same track Copy and Paste – a copied selection can be pasted in: another track after existing audio; a new audio track; an existing portion of a track to replace existing audio; an existing track as new audio

For higher grades you should also plan Where you will split and/or trim clips Splitting: When a track is split, the selected part of the track is moved to its own track. The original selection is replaced with silence Trimming: A useful technique to keep part of a track and delete everything else. When a track is trimmed everything to the left and right of the selection is trimmed Where you intend to use fading ‘Fade in’ and ‘Fade out’ are effects that can be applied to any type of audio track to change the volume of the track. Fade in gradually increases the sound and fade out gradually decreases the sound Where you intend to use silencing This is when a period of ‘quiet’ is inserted in a track. Silencing can be used to remove unwanted sections or background noises in a track
