Let’s start at the beginning… There are 2 types of cases…

CIVILCIVILCIVILCIVIL

Civil Cases deal with… A dispute between two or more parties. What is a dispute? When one side brings the other side to court to settle a problem, this is known as a lawsuit.

Who is involved? In a civil case, the person who filed the complaint (the lawsuit) is known as the plaintiff.

Who is involved? In a civil case, the person who is accused is known as the defendant.

What are the issues? What reason would a person have to file a lawsuit against someone else?

What are the issues? The two main reasons are… Injury Injury Property Property

What is the outcome? If the judge or jury decides in favor of the plaintiff…the defendant may have to pay compensation. Many times, the case will reach a settlement outside of court before the case is ever heard by a judge.
