Lesson #1 EQ: – What is poetry? What is a poem? Standard: ELACC7.RL.5 (poetry) – Students will read poems that will help them construct a definition of poetry while understanding some common elements. Poetry used: – “Eating Poetry” by Mark Strand – “Introduction to Poetry” by Billy Collins – “Alone” by Maya Angelou – “I’m Alive, I Believe in Everything” by Lesley Choyce everything/ – “Exit” by Rita Dove – “The Crystal Gazer” by Sara Teasdale – “Who Will Know Us?” by Gary Soto

Poetry Splash 1.Read seven selected poems. 2.Select one poem that you feel very strongly about (your favorite poem). 3.Complete the “What I Read-What I Think- What I Wonder” graphic organizer about the poem. ***Remember to look for lines and words that you like.*** 4.Be prepared to share with the class.
