Future Intentions: Your students’ top Career Cluster & known Pathway – (have a “career chat”; “tell me more about your ICAP?”) Ultimate Goals: Learning = Academic Earning = Career Living = Personal/ Social ( ASCA nat’l model, CTE Standards Advisement strategies & more) Classes: Their secondary intentional course sequence related to the PS courses available – CE/ASCENT & CTE taken into consideration when advising Permits connections between what Advisors, Counselors, educators, PS providers, and parents do to assist their students goal achievement. Also – relevancy of learning : ( answers “why do we have to do this?” & “how will this help me?”) “A Village Raises a Student” PWR – Postsecondary Workforce Readiness: the (w)holistic student. That means extra-curricular & life experience too! Integrated into curriculum, advisement, conversations, & school culture, campus options, relevancy for life! – (A term that is becoming more common) Accountability: Understanding and progress towards securing Financial Aid = Financial Literacy And it is student owned! A Career & Academic Portfolio An assessment tool ICAP Process… ICAP Individual Career Academic Plan Their Plan +Your Support =Future Growth & Success! Sept. 2010

Postsecondary Guide to ICAP: Why you can invest in it: – It’s best for students and their ability to transition seamlessly.. – it is a process that has been happening already and is now mandated by the state – that is a good thing. – It will prepare your PS Institution with what academic needs are to be met in addition to involving the Business & Industry found in your community – what needs they have will be communicated to the Secondary schools to ensure employment of our students in their changing future. – It is an additional guidance tool that impacts the fading away of the “terminal degree” concept. Why it is NOT a tracking system : – Pathways, Clusters and Plans are always flexible, changeable and can be deleted. – ICAP is a process with which awareness, exploration and preparation for the future are supported. – The plan is mandated to be reviewed annually which means updating it annually; however, most schools will update more frequently due to the nature and development of our young people. THIS IS A SECONDARY SCHOOL REQUIREMENT. – Capabilities to “pull up”, “log into” or “download” an incoming students’ ICAP might enhance the academic advisement and student retention process. How to get involved: – Ask you student about their ICAP. – Ask them about their interested in the world, outside of school. – Discuss their goals dreams and hopes for the future. Allow their imaginations to soar, never discouraging the flight. No matter how old they are! – Talk to your colleagues and faculty counterparts as well as business and industry partners about their career choices and education/training – ask if your students can visit their work site to learn more about their jobs. – Volunteer at Secondary and Primary institutions – some districts are beginning Career and Academic explorations early! – Create and utilize a account – see the resources that are available to help Explore, Prepare and Advance your students’ future. – You have a great influence and could be someone's first role model! What data supports the ICAP process: #1 The Current Colorado Pipeline: It is leaky. #2 The American School Counseling Association (ASCA) National Model: : Focuses on the Career, Academic and Personal/Social lives of all students. CO = #3 Career & Technical Education focuses on the connected, responsive and real aspects of career and academic guidance.
