Conference 2011 Effective Evangelism Mark Russell CEO Church Army
THANK YOU!!!
WHAT IF ??
Lord, dont make this just another conference...
Paul reminds us.. “I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God that brings Salvation to everyone who believes.” Romans 1:16
“Salvation” Reconcile Liberate Rescue Consecrate Transform Redeem Forgive Cheer Heal Restore
How will the Gospel transform if it is not believed? How will it be believed if it is not communicated? How will disciples live good news if their leaders do not set an example? How will the leaders set an example if they are drained dry by institutional maintenance?
Two contrasts in the Bible….
“Evangelism is the missionary, reforming, redeeming spirit evident throughout the history of Christianity”
1. Let’s go where Jesus would go
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”
The incarnation shows us that Jesus was born in the most inauspicious places, we need to be there too.
Parenting programme Lunch for elderly people Detached work on streets Prayer walks on streets Street pastors, waters and flipflops! Messy church
Chaplaincy to schools, prisons Giveaways on the streets Prayer on the streets Strong pastoral follow up on occasional offices
2.Let’s be rooted in love
When you see another person you see someone God takes seriously Archbishop Rowan Williams
3.Let’s reach those on the margins
Cute fluffy lambs do not run away!
The Good Shepherd leaves the 99 well behaved sheep to go after this one!
4.Let’s make our churches more welcoming and accessible
Church is what happens when people come together in community, to meet Jesus, each other, and share his love with the world around. Archbishop Rowan Williams
Changing models of faith sharing.. Believe → Belong → Behave Belong → Behave → Believe Bless → Belong → Behave → Believe
5.Let’s lead by example
Our example is important..
“the more time you spend with Christians the more time you spend talking about church. The more time you spend with non Christians the more time you spend talking about Jesus” Rt Revd Jack Nicholls
6.Let’s expect more from God
7.Let’s help people find their home in our churches
There are many reasons to compare our churches to an old male tortoise … Slow-moving … isolated … Ancient-looking withdrawn in its shell … won’t stick its neck out
There are many reasons to compare our culture to an orphaned hippo … Orphaned by religion … science … government … the economy … technology … consumerism…
There are many reasons to compare the changes in our world to a hurricane or tsunami …
Jesus spoke the values of the Kingdom
