Northwest Suburbs Archdiocese of Chicago Rigorous academics, numerous extra- curriculars and a large focus on faith formation Archdiocesan religion curriculum calls for spirituality development; the music curriculum does not.

The purpose of this study is to determine how the spirituality of junior high students can be enhanced through the instruction of sacred music in the parochial music classroom. Aka… Can I help my 7 th & 8 th graders better connect with God through song?

Do junior high students sing, play, and/or listen to sacred music as a way to develop spirituality? Do junior high students sing, play, and/or listen to sacred music as a way to develop spirituality? How does singing, playing and/or listening to sacred music influence a junior high student’s worship experience in the parochial music classroom and during school liturgies? Are junior high students’ spiritual experiences enhanced when the music educator facilitates discussions about the sacred music’s context, meaning and application to the students’ world?

Using the 4 songs from the Pretest, formally introduce and teach the songs over 11 classes.

Control Groups Musical Elements of the Songs… Examples -sight-reading the melody lines using solfege - isolating new rhythms -playing chord progressions on classroom instruments -analyzing the song forms. No discussion of meaning, affect, etc. Treatment Groups Musical AND Spiritual Elements of the Songs… Examples -individual writing prompts -small and large group guided conversations -Scriptural analysis Focus: What does this song mean? Why is it important? How does it relate to your spirituality?
