Presentation transcript:

What is alcohol measured in? Alcohol is measured in units Do you know what the maximum amount of units it is advised to drink in one day? 3-4 units (men) 2-3 units (women) What about in a full week (for men)? 21 And for women? 14

Alcohol All pupils will be able to explain the measurements that are used for alcohol and group different alcoholic drinks Most pupils will be able to group different alcoholic drinks and state what the Government suggests as a recommended daily allowance for men and women Some pupils will be able to work out how many units people drink and whether they are over the limit

But, do you know what each drink contains? Draw a table with the following as your headings: 1.Beers and ciders 2.Drinks containing spirits 3.Wine and drinks containing wine Start now in your books!

You need to list the following drinks into the categories.

Beers and ciders These include: lager, ale, stout, bitter, cider and perry The potency of these vary a large amount but are generally less than wines or spirits (however they are usually drunk in greater quantities)

Spirits & drinks containing spirits The main spirits are: vodka, brandy, whiskey, rum & gin But many drinks have some form of spirit in them, e.g. Baileys, Southern Comfort, Bacardi Breezers, Smirnoff Ice etc

Wine & drinks containing wine The main types of wine are: red, white and rosé, but they also come in sparkling varieties Also in this section are fortified wines such as Martini, Port, Vermouth, Pimms etc

But, how many units are in each drink? Look at your table of drinks, which ones do you think would be in the following categories. 1.Drinks you think are under 1 unit 2.Drinks you think are under 2 units 3.Drinks you think are under 3 units 4.Drinks you think are over 3 units You are going to write the number next top the alcohol in your table.

How did you do? – Under 1 unit There’s actually only one drink under 1 unit That is Baileys coming in at 0.85

Under 2 units Lowest in this category is: Bell’s whiskey (1) Then, Bacardi breezer (1.1) Then, Strongbow cider half pint (1.28) Then, Smirnoff ice (1.51) Then, Budweiser (1.65) Then, Southern comfort & lemonade (1.85) Were there any surprises there?

Under 3 units Lowest in this category is: Vodka & coke (2) Diamond white (2.06) Sparkling white wine standard (2.1) Standard rosé (2.28) Pint of Carling lager (2.33) Were there any surprises there?

Over 3 units Lowest in this category is: Large red wine (3.25) Large white wine (3.38) And lastly, the bottle of Martini (11.25) Were there any surprises there?

Who knows their units? Read the paragraphs about Sam and Greg, you need to work out how many units they have had in total, how many units they are over or under the weekly limit and give them a piece of advice each. Use the information on the board to help you.

The Facts: True or false….It is against the law to be drunk in a public place? TRUE How many children go to hospital each year because of alcohol poisoning in the UK? 500, 5000 or True or False…..Black coffee can sober you up when drunk? FALSE, only time can True or False…..A small person is more affected by alcohol than a large person? TRUE

The risks: Alcohol is often used to celebrate...some wine may even be good for us in small quantities BUT... Drinking too much and too often can have short and long term consequences for us all:  On our health  On our looks  On our relationships  On our personal safety  And ultimately on our lives What examples can you think of for each? Look at the following warnings, what is each trying to say?

Plenary – what have you learnt? I’m going to choose about 14 people to answer questions on what we have covered today You’ll have 10 seconds to answer!
