Progressive Steps Making Government efficient. The following are some steps that were taken in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s that helped society become more effective

Commission Plan A plan to elect city commissioners or a city manager to with expertise in city services to hire or select people qualified to run city departments. Galveston, Texas was the first.

Direct Primary A party election in which all party members vote for a candidate to run in the general election for legislature.

Initiative-Allows a group of citizens to introduce legislation and required the legislature to vote on it. Referendum-allowed proposed legislation to be submitted to the voters for approval. Recall allowed voters to demand a special election to remove an elected official from office.

Women’s Suffrage In 1848 Elizabeth Stanton and Lucretia Mott held the first woman's right convention. In June 1919, the Senate finally passed the Nineteenth Amendment. On August 26, Which gave women the right to vote.
