Keeping Research Real: Inquiry Based Student Learning Brittany Maus

Think, Pair, Share What type of research do you use in your classroom? How do you teach research skills?

Essential Questions How do we make sure that students are engaged in the classroom? How can we encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning? How can we use student driven inquiry effectively when teaching research skills?

“Being told is the opposite of finding out.” -Jimmy Britton “The teaching is “structured for surprise” (Graves 2001, 51) and it’s the promise of what you might discover together that gives both students and teachers energy for the study.” -Katie Wood Ray, Study Driven

What is inquiry? “Inquiry is a way of looking at the world, a questioning stance we take when we seek to learn something we don’t yet know. We drive ourselves to learn more and more because we are seeking answers to our own questions.” -Diane Parker, Planning for Inquiry: It’s not an oxymoron!

What does Inquiry look like?

How does this type of instruction benefit students? Increased self-awareness Personal responsibility for learning Promotion of critical thinking Enhanced confidence and independence Increased motivation/interest Acquisition, retention, and transfer of knowledge Alignment with Bloom’s Taxonomy Support of human basic needs including competence, choice, enjoyment -Michael Malone, Inquiry-Based Early Childhood Teacher Preparation

Student Driven Inquiry in my classroom Research Standards 1-6.1Generate how and why questions about a topic of interest Use print sources of information (for example, books, newspapers, pictures, charts, and graphs) and nonprint sources to access information Use the Internet with the aid of a teacher.

How did the author become an expert on snakes? Internet Read informational books about snakes Pet snake Watched a video Went on a snake hunt “Just asking questions can lead to the best classroom experiences.” -Bobby Jeanpierre, Planting the Spirit of Inquiry

Now it’s your turn to do research and become an author Students chose an animal to research. Students created RAN similar to KWL. -Tony Stead, Reality Checks Tell me I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand. -Chinese proverb

Research Methods Internet-Share TabsShare Tabs Informational Books Bee hunt United Streaming Videos-IPods Magazines Encyclopedias Newspaper Articles Web Quest

How can I remember all of this? Students were given a note pad to record important information about bees.

We’ve done the research, now what? Storyboards Books Photo Stories Brady Hayley Katie

Practical Application How can you use inquiry in your classroom?

The kids are making the meaning, so the meaning lasts. -Katie Johns
