Warm-Up Open your atlas to the World Map. There are 3 climate zones that we’re going to learn about today. Using the World Map, see if you can figure out what they are!

SWBAT identify climate zones; SWBAT explain how technology influences human interactions with the environment Objectives

Hot, Cold, and Medium Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company Tropical climates are found near the equator. The sun is directly overhead nearly all year. As a result, the area gets a lot of direct heat. Temperatures in tropical climates are typically greater than 18 °C (64.4 °F). Tropical climates get different amounts of precipitation.

Hot, Cold, and Medium Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company Temperate climates are found in the middle latitudes. For most of the year, a temperate climate has temperatures between 10 °C and 18 °C ( °F). Most temperate climates have four seasons. Temperate climates get different amounts of precipitation.

Hot, Cold, and Medium Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company Polar climates are farthest from the equator. They are found near Earth’s poles. Polar climates get little precipitation. They are covered in snow and ice year-round. Temperatures in polar climates are typically less than 10 °C (50 °F).

Hot, Cold, and Medium Copyright © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company Identify the tropical, temperature, and polar climate zones on the map below. Tropical Temperate Polar Arctic Circle Tropic of Cancer Tropic of Capricorn Antarctic Circle

Find the climate zone of each of these with your partner. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Svalbard, Norway Shanghai, China Nairobi, Kenya Delhi, India Sydney, Australia Antarctica

Independent Work Complete the following paper on your own without notes.
