Preparations to Install the HBD for Run 6 Craig Woody BNL PHENIX Weekly Meeting January 26, 2006

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/062 Needed Preparations Gas system Mounting system HV, LV power Cables (HV, LV, signal) and support Readout electronics (FEE) Detector (actual or prototype)

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/063 Gas Monitoring Hutch Will house local gas monitoring of input and output gas to HBD O 2 and H 2 O sensors Gas Transparency monitor

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/064 Order placed with McPherson delivery by ~ mid May Gas Transparency Monitor McPherson 234/302 VUV Spectrometer

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/065 High Voltage - will use existing LeCroy 1458/1471 system - cables will be made at BNL Low Voltage - have 1 Megapak in hand (enough for 1 detector) - cables on order Signal cables - approved by BNL Safety Committee - ordered 1/20/06, delivery ~ 6-8 wks (1 st pcs in ~ 4 wks) - needs support fixture around detector in IR HV, LV Power and Cables

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/066 Electronics Rack LeCroy crates for readout electronics Megapak Now installed at previous location of MVD rack

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/067 Prototype Readout Electronics Schedule Two HBD FEMs, clock fanout, backplane, clock master module are already exist. – We are buying enough parts for 5 additional FEM modules. 5 FEM can readout 240 channels. – Full system testing need to be perform with optical module and new DCM daughter cards before assembly additional FEMs. – Power supply and rack already exist. We are waiting for prototype of the new DCM daughter card and optical modules. – We expect no later than end of Feb for fully assembled prototype modules. – One set of module will be enough for small prototype run C-Y.Chi

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/068 C-Y.Chi HBD ADC Board Signals from Preamp ADC FPGA Receiver/ shaping

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/069 HBD ADC Crate Clock Fanout Clock and serial data cables from ClockMaster Clock cables We have one fully backplane and one partial backplane. C-Y.Chi

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/0610 Full Readout System The procurement cycle the FEM parts for the full readout system are expecting to be around 2-3 months. The PCB fabrication and assembly are around 1-2 months. We could start buying majority of the components. The final PCB fabrication and assembly will not start till full system readout test and final design review. – Estimate to be no early than end of March. The schedule is very tight to have everything fabricated before May. C-Y.Chi

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/0611 Final Detector  First half of final detector may be available the end of April pad plane ordered through CERN material should arrive at CERN early February pad plane delivered to Weizmann by mid March <1 month to complete construction ship to Stony Brook to arrive by end of April  Photocathodes will be made and installed at Stony Brook evaporator up and running well (producing good PCs) full size glove box should arrive by ~ end of March  Final detector assembly and testing to be done at Stony Brook  Detector could be ready by ~ end of May

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/0612 Evaporation Facility at Stony Brook

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/0613 Evaporation Facility at Stony Brook

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/0614 CsI Photocathodes Produced at Stony Brook Measured on VUV spectrometer at BNL B.Azmoun

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/0615 Prototype Detector  At BNL since July ’05, tested in lab 2-86 in Physics  Will replace one GEM which has 4 shorted segments can be done in Clean Room in Instrumentation  Needs only CsI GEM to make operational would be made and installed at Stony Brook  Will have new readout board (final preamps) by mid March  Has residual leak rate which will limit UV transmission

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/0616 Full Scale Prototype in Lab 2-86 in Physics

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/0617 Prototype Leak Rate and Gas Transmission B.Azmoun Residual leak rate and outgassing may limit overall UV transmission Can reach ~ 20 ppm H 2 O and < 10 ppm O 2 at high (~ 3 lpm) flow rate

C.Woody, PHENIX Weekly Meeting, 1/26/0618 Conclusions  Preparations are being made to install the HBD detector in the IR for Run 6, most of which are independent of whether we install the final detector or the full scale prototype.  The final detector is on a very tight schedule in order to have it completed in time, but it is not impossible that it could be ready before the end of the run.  The full scale prototype could be made ready to install much earlier in the run (~ March-April). A test with this detector would have some limitations, but we would still learn a lot from a system test.  It’s extremely important that we test at least some version of the HBD during Run 6 in order to be ready to take real data in Run 7.
