The End of the Reign of Terror

Do-Now Is the execution of Louis the XVI or Robespierre consistent with Enlightenment ideas? Why or why not? Aim: How did Napoleon rise to power?

The End of the Reign of Terror Why did the Reign of Terror finally end? – People grew tired of violence Committee on Public Safety – Keep the peace. – French economy was suffering due to expenses of war. – People felt unsafe. – 40,000 people killed during the reign Peasants made up a majority of killed.

What replaced it? The Directory – Third government body since the Bastille fell. – The Council of safety – 5 member council – Also had a bicameral legislature led by property owning males (voting rights limited to property owning males). – Moderate approach. – Radicalization begins as a result of food shortages, economics problems, continuing war with Austria… Royalists and Jacobins

Why did Napolean help lead a Coup against the Directory? Social: the need to develop an identity that includes everyone. Political: No stable govt for over 10 years. Economic: continued poverty, food shortages, debt, war….

Who was Napolean?

Napoleon’s Diary 1.What does Napoleon mean when he says, “Paris has a short memory” on 1/1/1798? 2.On 1/29/98, Napleon says, “…the Orient awaits a man!” What does that mean and what does that say about Bonaparte’s self-image. 3.What do you think happens around 1817 that changes the nature of Napoleon’s entries? 4.Based on these entries, who was Napoleon?
