What does the Moon do? F The Moon reflects the light of the Sun. FThe Moon passes through four major shapes during a cycle that repeats itself every 29.5 days. F The Moon reflects the light of the Sun. FThe Moon passes through four major shapes during a cycle that repeats itself every 29.5 days.

About the Moon… FThe Moon looks like its changing shape in the sky. FThe different angles causes us to see bright parts of the Moon's surface. FCalled "phases" of the Moon. New Moon This is the first phase.

Waxed Crescent moon- the 2nd phase "Waxing" means growing and refers to the size of the illuminated part of the moon that is increasing.

First Quarter Moon This is the third phase.

Waxing Gibbous Moon This is the Fourth phase.

Full Moon- 5th phase The full moon occurs when the Moon lies on the opposite side of Earth from the Sun. The full moon reaches its highest elevation at midnight.

Waning Gibbous Moon This is the sixth phase.

Last Quarter Moon This is the seventh phase.

Waning Crescent Moon- 8th phase "Waning" means shrinking. When the the Moon is waning, we see a little less of the Moon each day until it completely disappears.

Then the cycle starts over!

Facts about the Moon FMoon orbits the Earth counterclockwise (in 27 days) FBy measuring ages of lunar rocks- moon is about 4.6 billion years old (same age as Earth) FMoon orbits the Earth counterclockwise (in 27 days) FBy measuring ages of lunar rocks- moon is about 4.6 billion years old (same age as Earth)

Facts about the Moon FThe Moon shows the same face to the Earth at all times FIf you weigh 132 pounds on Earth, you would weight about 22 pounds on the moon b/c of gravity difference.
