H ISTORY Chapter 13 Study Guide

O BJECTIVE 1.1 Mexico gave Moses Austin a grant of land to get settlers from the United States to build ranches and farms in Texas. One reason that United States settlers in Texas wanted their freedom was that they wanted more say in the government. The opinion of those who opposed the annexation of Texas by the United States was that annexing Texas could lead to war with Mexico.

O BJECTIVE 1.3 Some citizens of the United Stated wanted to annex Texas because of the manifest destiny. The Bear Flag Revolt was a battle in which the United Stated had victory during the Mexican War. One reason early settlers moved to Oregon Country was to teach the Christian religion to Native Americans.

O BJECTIVE 2.1 The Oregon fever can be best described as people eagerly seeking a new life in the West. Life along the Oregon Trail can be best described as a long and difficult journey. People traveled along the Oregon Trail by wagon train. The following trails took people westward: the Mormon Trail, Santa Fe Trail, and Old Spanish Trail.

O BJECTIVE 2.3 The Mormons chose to move west because they had been mistreated because of their religious beliefs. The gold rush effected the population of California in that the population grew rapidly. Thousands of people used the California Trail to go to California during the gold rush.

O BJECTIVE 3.2 People used all types of routes to reach California during the gold rush including water, land and horseback. One generalization that best describes the gold miners was that few found any gold at all. The forty-niners came from many different places.

O BJECTIVE 3.3 The miners faced many hardships including lack of medicine, no place to sleep, and high prices for goods.
