How I use Twitter and Delicious Charlotte Carey 23rd January 2009
What is Twitter? Micro-blogging 140 characters What are you doing? A bit like text messaging A bit like Facebook status
Twitter as a teaching tool Interactive Marketing: –Examples from companies in how they’re using Twitter to market Entrepreneurship –Access to entrepreneurs, networks and role models
Benefits of Twitter Ambient intimacy (Reichelt, 2007) Ambient Knowledge Transfer (Carey et al, 2009)? Collaboration - (co-authors, project partners, sector) Networking Direct access industry into the classroom Accelerates serendipity Access via Lots of other services e.g. Twitterific to help view
Downside Potentially distracting Potentially short-term how long until users migrate to another service: –E.g. Facebook>Twitter Ambient bitching? Superficial relationships? Ideas pinched? …..I couldn’t think of many so I asked my twitter buddies….
What are the downsides to Twitter? I think the biggest issue is simply not understanding what it's for, which is hard as it's not really for anything!peteashtoncharlottecarey if you're doing it right there aren't many. doing it right is making it work right for you. You need reasonable expectationsjonhickmancharlottecarey re twitter down sides: you have to be willing to have a go. It can take a while to see the point. Most of my friends dont.annettenaudincharlottecarey Information overload. Possible fix: realising don't have to read everything. Like listening to everyone in crowded pub.peteashtoncharlottecarey
Delicious What is it? –Delicious (formerly del.icio.us, pronounced "delicious") – social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. – –Network with other users – use their bookmarks –Instead of VLE? –Developing one’s own resources that students can benefit from, they can develop their own –You could all network/share your bookmarks
As a teaching tool don't teach but use it to collect personal bookmarks inc for research and share with colleagues. Collect on the fly at confsKellyJScharlottecarey set up RSS import into facebook so can tell ‘friends’ what pages I've bookmarked Try to use it as part of my personal website - as an alternative course reference source in addition to the official thingsrtunstallcharlottecarey
