O Health- is the combination physical, mental/emotional, social health. O These three concepts create what is called “Your Health Triangle”.
Your Health Triangle O To live a healthy life you have to keep a well maintained balance of these three aspects. O Spirituality is seen as an additional part of Mental/Emotional part of the triangle. O What do you think will happen if you were to focus on one or two aspects of the triangle?
Physical Health O Is about how the body functions. Examples of Physical Health O 8-10 hours of sleep O Eat nutritional meals and drink 8 cups of water O minutes of exercise O Avoid the use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs O Bathe daily, floss and brush everyday
Mental/Emotional Health It consist of your feeling and your thoughts. This includes…. O How you feel about yourself. (self esteem) O How you meet the demands of daily life. O And how you cope with problems that occur in your life.
O Enjoy challenges that help them grow. O Accept responsibilities for their actions. O Have a sense of control over their lives. O Can express their emotions in appropriate ways. O Have a positive outlook. O Usually can handle stressful or frustrating moments in life. People that are mentally/emotionally healthy….
Spiritual Health Deep-seated sense of meaning and purpose of life. O Now this does not mean you belong to a religious group, but this often is associated religion. O This is a since of value and purpose for ones life.
Social Health Interaction with friends, family, coworkers, or companions in a social situation. This includes… O Seeking and lending support when needed. O Communicating clearly and listening to others. O Showing respect and care for yourself and others.
Social Health O Many things can have a influence of your social health…the diagram shows what some influences could be.
Keeping it all balanced. O When all areas are balanced and in sync with one another it is known as wellness. O Wellness is the overall state of well being or total health.
The Health Continuum O Your health and wellness is always changing. O For example you can feel well rested and full of energy one day and the next day you could come down with the cold. O The changing of your health at any moment can be seen as a point on what is known as the Health Continuum, or sliding scale.
The Health Continuum O As you get older, your position on the continuum begins to change. O Many Americans start to slide to the negative side of the scale due to poor diet, lack of exercise, and becoming over weight. O This can lead to chronic disease, which is an ongoing condition or illness. O Examples are heart disease, obesity, and cancer.

O Heredity- all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents. (ex..eye color, hair color, body type, and health complications.) O Tony’s parents both have diabetes therefore is at risk inheriting it, what can he do to decrease his chances of getting it?
Environment Environment itself means the sum of all your surrounding. There are three different types of environment factors…. O Physical O Social O Culture
Physical Environment O Is the world around you. O Right now you can not control your physical environment. Example O Neighborhood and school safety O Air and water quality O Access to medical care
Physical Environment What can you control in your physical environment? Name some positive and negative influences in your physical environment….
Social environment O Is made up of all the people around you, including your family and peers. O Peers- people of the same age who share similar interest. Can your peers have a positive or negative influence on how you make healthy decisions?
Culture O Refers to the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. O This can include an ethnic group, community, nation, or specific part of the world. O Culture ranges from languages you speak, foods you eat, spiritual beliefs, and traditions you may practice.
Media and Technology O Media- various methods for communicating information. O Technology- radio, television, internet, newspaper, and magazines. O How can media and Technology be used for influence healthy decision making? O Who has the most influence with media?
Objective for section 3 Risk behaviors can harm your health, but there are steps you can take to avoid or reduce these risk.

Identifying Risk Behaviors What are risk behaviors? O They are actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others. O Everyday you take risk….this can range from simply crossing the street to drinking and driving.

Recognizing Risk Behaviors In 2014 the CDC, Center of Disease Control identified the top six risk behaviors that accounted for most of the deaths and disabilities among young adults under the age of 24… 1. Tobacco Use 2. Unhealthy dietary behavior 3. Inadequate physical activity 4. Alcohol and other drug use 5. Sexual behavior that may result in HIV infections, other STDs, and unplanned pregnancy. 6. Behavior that could lead to injury or death.
Risk and its Consequences O Taking risk can have both short term and long term effects on your life. Before taking a risk think of the implications that it could bring. O What are short and long term risk with smoking?
Risk and Consequences O Risk can also add up over time and increase your chances of injury or death. O Cumulative risks are related risk that increase in effect with each added risk. 1. Texting and driving. 2. Eating high-fat meal every meal. 3. Running across train track will a shoe untied. 4. Operating a rolling meth lab.

How to Avoid or Reduce Risk O You can protect your health and minimize the possibility of risk by practicing positive health behaviors. Simple safety behaviors are… 1. Wearing your seat belt 2. Wearing your helmet when riding a bike or atv 3. Looking across the street before crossing
How to avoid or reduce risk O Another way to reduce health risk is through prevention. O Prevention is taking step to keep something from happening or from getting worse. O Example…. Getting routine medical or dental check ups. O Check ups can detect health problems early or, thus preventing them from getting worse.
Abstaining from High-Risk Behaviors O One of the most effective strategies from protecting your health is practicing abstinence. O What is abstinence? O Abstinence is a deliberate decision to avoid high- risk behaviors, including sexual activity and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. O When practicing abstinence you are protecting yourself from chronic disease associated with those substances or activites.
Lifestyle Factors O Lifestyle Factors are the personal habits or behaviors related to the way a person lives. O Scientist of discovered that these habits have a positive effect on a person’s health, happiness, and longevity. Basically if you practice health behaviors you’re happier, healthier, and live longer.

The Importance of Health Education O Becoming more health conscious and making more educated decisions regarding your health can benefit in more ways than just you becoming healthy. O In 2012 the cost of U.S. health care reached $2.8 trillion dollars. Lets put that is perspective that comes out to $8,915 per person. Practicing healthy behaviors and avoiding risk can cut the expense.
The Nations Healthy Goals O Helping you maintain good health is an important goal of the gov. O The U.S. government releases national health goals and objectives through the Healthy People Program. O What is Healthy People? O Its is a nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the U.S.
The Nations Healthy Goals O The Healthy People program changes every 10 years, this helps fits with the ever changed population of the U.S. and the health problem that come with it. O Healthy People 2010’s goals were to.. 1. Increase the quality and length of life 2. Remove differences in health outcomes that result from factors such as genders, race, educations, disability, and location. (Health Disparities) 3. Reduce the overweight and obesity rate in the U.S.

How to be Health Literate O What is Healthy Literacy? O It is a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services. O Qualities of a health-literate person includes.. 1. A critical thinker and good problem solver 2. A responsible and productive citizen 3. A self- directed learner 4. An effective communicator.
Become Health Literate O What makes someone health literate? 1. They know where to find health information. 2. They decide if the information is correct. 3. They assess the risk and benefits of treatment. 4. They figure out how much medicine to take. 5. They understand test results.
