 Title: Short, descriptive, and unique phrase.  EXAMPLE: Lord Randall Characters & Context  The more notecards you have, the more specific the titles should be. You cannot name all the note cards Lord Randall because that is too general.

 Direct Quotation: Exact copy of words from a source around 3 sentences.  Include a parenthetical reference in the “Direct Quotation” text box of every note card.  Use the activity from yesterday to find the parenthetical references.  EXAMPLE ON THE FOLLOWING SLIDE.

Direct Quotation “O where hae ye been, my handsome young man?” “I hae been to the wild wood; mother, make my bed soon,/For I’m weary wi’ hunting, and fain wald lie down.” (“Lord Randall” 2-4) Parenthetical Reference

 Paraphrase: Restate quote in your own words after thinking through (all) the information.  EXAMPLE: After returning from hunting in the woods, Lord Randall asks his mother to make his bed because he would like to lie down.  This can eventually be copied into a paragraph.

 My Ideas: Write a comment, question, focus statement, or paragraph label.  EXAMPLE: Lord Randall returns quite weary and so ill he needs to rest right away.  This will be your opinion about his death: murder or mistake.

 Step 1: Take out the “Billy Boy!” article from yesterday.  Step 2: Read the portion of the article in the box.  Step 3: Select between one and three sentences for the direct quotation.  Step 4: Paraphrase the sentences (reword).  Step 5: Comment on how the evidence makes your case.

Direct Quotation In The Journal of Folk Song Society it is suggested that Lord Randal is the 6th Earl of Chester, poisoned by his wife in (Ashton)

Paraphrase Lord Randall may have been the sixth Earl of Chester because The Journal of Folk Song Society speculated that in 1232 Chester was poisoned by his wife.

My Ideas POISONING OPTION The Earl of Chester’s murdering wife is represented by Lord Randall’s true love.

My Ideas FOOD POISONING OPTION While it is “suggested” that the earl was murdered, there is no evidence ruling out food poisoning.

 You may work with a partner.  Create two note cards  1. One for the ballad, “Lord Randall”  2. One for an article (food poisoning or poisoning).  Put everything in your envelope.  Finish the integrating quotes activity.
