Presentation transcript:

Lab Equipment Mrs. Cromwell-Olson Southwest School

n Bunsen burner- used to heat objects 2,000 ˚F

n Balance- used to mass objects in grams n Electronic balances- will also be used throughout the year

n Clamp- holds test tube and flasks above flame n Ring- supports glassware n Ring stand- holds clamp and ring

n Test tube- mix, heat, hold chemicals, measured in mL n Beaker- “ball-park” estimate for measuring in mL n Florence flask- items boil better, because of rounded shape

n Erlenmeyer flask- most commonly used to react chemicals n Graduated cylinder- used for measuring volume (mL) n Spring scale - used to measure odd shaped objects

n Wash bottle - usually holds distilled water to wash glassware or to rinse solids out of container when filtering n Test tube holder - used to hold test tubes over flame n Tongs - used to hold beakers that are hot

n Wire gauze/ stand - used to hold an item over flame n Crucible - used to heat items at high temperatures n Forceps - used to grab small items

n Test tube rack - hold test tubes that are being used n Evaporating dish - used for evaporating a liquid, can be heated n Watch glass - can be used to cover a beaker

n Funnel - used to filter solids out of liquids n Filter paper - generally used with funnel to filter solids from liquids n Medicine dropper- used to add small amount of liquids

n Thermometer - measure temperature n Safety glasses/ goggles - protect eyes from chemicals, broken glass, sharp objects n Stirring rod - used to stir, usually glass

n Wooden splints - used to start fire rather than a match n Hand lens - used to magnify small things n Rubber tubing - used to connect items to transfer gases and liquids

n Rubber stopper - used to plug glassware and used to hold thermometer & glass tubing n Test tube brush - used to clean glassware

Other Equipment Striker Weighing dish
