Presentation transcript:

In what ways does the food industry contribute to the obesity epidemic?

As you watch the video, list each major issue that is addressed.

* Obesity and childhood diabetes * Cost of healthy vs. unhealthy foods * Pesticides and other chemicals vs. organics * Quality of fast food products * Diseases and food contamination (E. coli, etc.) * Poor working conditions and immigrant labor * *Ethical treatment of animals

* Buy organic food * Support local farmers * Read food labels carefully * Demand better quality from major retailers (Vote with your fork!) * Vote for legislators who support better regulations on food industry (such as Kevin’s Law) * Get involved with organizations like PETA * Buy organic foods and/or from local farmers (apply for grants to fund this) * Provide better nutrition education beginning in elementary school * Set certification standards for cafeteria personnel * Plant gardens and grow fruits and vegetables on-site * Host workshops for parents and other community members

Do all of these issues really come down to money? More importantly, can we really afford to ignore the problem any longer?
