WHY DOES THIS STUFF ALWAYS HAPPEN IN MY GAMES THE TUMULTUOUS CAREER OF LOUIE LUMP-LUMP

What makes a clean game No contested calls No injuries Good field conditions No confusion No on field incidents No post game incidents

Quest for the clean game Personal Preparation Rules Knowledge Game Management Capabilities Game Awareness Proper Use of Mechanics Self Awareness

Personal Preparation Appearance Appearance can be argued as the single most significant predictor of success Out of shape – don’t blame the Holidays Louie, you were fat in October Out of uniform- Louie shops at the recycle bin

Preparation Knowledge of the game Out of information- Test- Louie does the first 50 questions- Joey the fish does the last 50 Still using 2010 rule book

Rules Knowledge Flat out wrong –Louie doesn’t know the rule-- Followed by: Bluff and bluster -- Louie takes charge-- Followed by: Pepper tester -- Louie proves he knows the rules -- Followed by: Confusion, contested calls, on field incidents

Preparation Louie--Fat, sloppy and ignorant is no way to ref a lacrosse game

Game Management 5 C’s Character – What do you stand for? Courage – Do what is right Cooperation – For the good of the game Communication – Knowledge is good Confidence – I am the game manager

Awareness Awareness and knowledge of the game What rules are we playing? When does the game start? Wow I did not expect that! Wow, they are playing rough. Is this a big game?

Awareness Injured player- What would Louie do? 1. Physically check the player out and tell people what to do. 2. Laugh and joke with crew. 3. Call player a sissy or a baby. 4. Say aloud ”this is going to cut into our postgame drinking.” 5. Stand back, observe and say nothing.

Awareness During the game what is on Louie’s mind? 1. Where is ball-where is it going? 2. Where is partner-what is he doing? 3. Clock management 4. Sideline management 5. None of the above

Attitude Coaches, players and parents are ruining the game The first couple of weeks Louie is getting the rust off Rest of the season Louie is burnt out Louie hates games like this Just give Louie his money

Mechanics Out of position – Louie can’t, won’t move Out on an island – you are on your own Out of touch with modern game – lacrosse is lacrosse, still use a ball and stick Your mechanics make me work too much- Louie just wants to ref and get paid.

Training Everything you say in training Louie will use to justify his troubles You told Louie to do quick restarts- You told Louie not to listen to coaches-

Self Awareness Everybody likes Louie Louie is in a groove Louie’s veteran status will get him through Louie can ref this game in his sleep Louie don’t listen to people, people listen to Louie

Question all officials must ask How big a Louie am I?
