Cal/Val at CIOSS Ted Strub – CIOSS/COAS/OSU Cooperative Institute for Oceanographic Satellite Studies College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences Oregon State University

Cal/Val at CIOSS

Types of sensors and ocean parameters seen by these sensors Ocean Color (SeaWiFS, MODIS, HES-CW [GOES-R3], Hyperion Ocean Vector Winds (QuikSCAT, Windsat) IR (AVHRR, GOES) – SST, Frontal Position Microwave SST (TMI, AMSR) – BC for atmospheric models Altimeter – Past validation of TOPEX velocities, Comparison of ALT SSH to tide gauge SSH Comparison of 2-D fields to mesoscale surveys AVHRR, other: Cloud Analyses, Surface Radiation SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) – not presently investigated by CIOSS PI’s

Cal/Val at CIOSS: Ocean Color Ricardo Letelier: In situ flowthrough surface water optics – 5m. Summer, Coincident in situ and satellite (SeaWiFS and MODIS) data compiled. Analysis beginning.

Cal/Val at CIOSS: Ocean Color COAST Coastal Ocean Applications and Science Team GOES-R Risk Reduction Mark Abbott, Chair; Curt Davis, Executive Scientist, PI’s in CIOSS and many other institutions Initial Workshops defined applications and the specifications of sensor channels needed to address those applications for HES-CW: Hyperspectral Environmental Suite – Coastal Water Proposals are being submitted (FYO6) for activities to simulate the expected data (models and HYPERION), develop and validate algorithms, examine in water optics in different regions, etc. In situ field studies will be carried out in three different regions: East Coast West Coast Gulf Coast

Cal/Val at CIOSS: Ocean Color Peter Strutton & Michelle Wood: HAB’s off Oregon – identify and track Evaluation of MOBY-2 modifications for ocean color Cal/Val Workshops to evaluate the requirements needed for Climate Data Records (CDR’s) for ocean color products

Cal/Val at CIOSS: Ocean Vector Winds Mike Freilich: Use of QuikSCAT to validate Windsat Production and evaluation of high-resolution QuikSCAT winds (5-12 km) Dudley Chelton: SST influence on surface winds – QuikSCAT vs Windsat Ocean Vector Winds Workshop (Freilich, Chelton, Chang): Connect research and operational users, discuss different requirements of each group Discuss and implement Cal/Val approaches for Windsat/QuikSCAT
