Henri Matisse, a source of inspiration for French pupils Ecole Lucie Aubrac - CE1 (2 nd grade)

Henri Matisse (1869 – 1954) was a French artist, known for his use of color. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Although he was initially labelled a Fauve (wild beast), because of his use of color, by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting.Fauve His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

Matisse is known for : His portraits

his representation of houses seen from the inside Which often include windows opening on the french landscapes.

His collages Which are made by sticking pieces of coloured papers onto paper

Pupils created their own masterpiece inspired by the goldfish The goldfish is a famous painting, made in 1912.

Children created the background

Then they created the goldfish bowl with torn-out papers

Here are some of the pupils’ drawings

The children also studied an other well-known Matisse’s masterpiece called : Polynesia, the see A collage made in 1946

Just like Matisse, the children cut out pieces of paper and sticked them to create their own work.

They painted the border and created a snow effect…

They decided to call their masterpiece « Winter »
