e-Learning: components of e-learning Mohammed Hassan 1

1- Courses: Technologies continually change and develop, yet the method of how adults learn remains the same. As a result, e-learning courses usually take as their starting point the theory of adult education that assumes the students to be self-motivated, goal-oriented, practical, and oriented towards experience. Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan 2

1- Courses: On the basis of these facts, electronic courses should share the following characteristics: Allowing the choice of instruction according to the learner and his/her learning tempo Easy to use controls and navigation Precisely set, measurable learning objectives Engaging and logically structured learning content Instructional strategies that use practical examples, case studies, simulations and graphic representations Combinations of various instructional strategies Evaluation to confirm progress Possibility of student feedback 3Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan

1- Courses: The form of the course is always determined by variety of criteria, among them the students’ backgrounds (education levels, relationship to computers, setting where they study), the type of materials taught (theory, practical activities, working approaches) or technological possibilities (computers, networks, Internet access). There are currently many different forms, from linear presentation of materials through interactive tutorials up to simulations of real situations. 4 Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan

1- Courses: The technology of the courses must reflect the fact that the content must be highly usable for the actual needs of the student. This means that the course should be easy to “disassemble” into components of any size, which can either be examined by the student and used according to specific need (so- called informal learning), or by contrast used to assemble courses to an extent determined by the students’ individual needs. 5 Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan

2- management systems: “Management system” is a term frequently used in e-learning to designate LMS (Learning Management System). The essential function of LMS is to organize and manage learning and competencies. 6 Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan

2- management systems: A good LMS should provide: The management and evidencing of all types of learning from asynchronous electronic courses through virtual classrooms to traditional classroom learning A central catalogue of all training events (electronic courses, virtual classrooms /videoconferences, classroom lectures, external courses), registration procedures, administration of the associated resources and finances Accessibility of training events, oversight of activities of individual users in whole or in part, reporting of all types of instruction activities both together and separately 7 Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan

2- management systems: A wide range of synchronous and asynchronous communication channels between students, lecturers and managers, means for the acquisition, exchange and sharing of information and knowledge Automation of the learning process, ability to work with other systems 8 Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan

3- development tools These are the means used for the creation or assembling of the instruction content. They include simple “assemblers” to put together courses from previously prepared screens as well as highly professional tools allowing for animation, 3D modeling and the complete design of all course sequences and associated elements. In creating a high-quality course, a combination of various tools is usually employed. Multimedia elements are prepared through specialized programs for creating and modifying images, animation, video or sound, and the resulting course is then assembled through the chosen development tool(s) for e-learning, which should: 9 Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan

3- development tools Creating the individual course screens using formatted text and images Support insertion of various different multimedia elements (images, animation, video, sound, simulation) in known formats. Support the instructional strategies of e-learning Contain a wide array of elements for testing, questions and user feedback Contain tools for the programming to react to user activity. Allow for the creation of courses meeting e-learning standards for implementation in the LMS. 10 Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan

4- LCMS: The term LCMS (Learning Content Management System) is used to describe systems that serve towards the development of electronic courses while at the same time addressing the team process of the creation and maintenance of content, which includes the didactic processing, creation, sharing, distribution and modification of contents with the cooperation of experts, pedagogues, media professionals and programmers. 11 Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan

4- LCMS: A good LCMS should consequently provide: A teamwork process for creation and management of content. The administration and re-use of content sources, the sharing, versioning, securing of content and sources. The decomposition and composition of content into learning objects. 12Prepared By: Mohammed Hassan
