+ MSDS and NFPA Safety Austin High School Chemistry Ms. Lizette Gutierrez

Standard System for the Identification of the Hazards of Materials for Emergency Response “Fire diamond" used by emergency personnel to quickly and easily identify the risks posed by hazardous materials. This helps determine what, if any, special equipment should be used, procedures followed, or precautions taken during the initial stages of an emergency response.

HEALTH SPECIAL REACTIVITY (STABILITY) FLAMMABILITY

Least Serious 4 Most Serious 40 Flammable vapor which burns readily Substance is stable

Avoid water. May detonate with heat or ignition. Severe health risk. Burns readily. Diborane

 MSDS informs a person about all the necessary precautions to take while working with that chemical.  Gives specific information about the handling, disposal, and exposure risks for each chemical.  On file for all purchased chemicals.  Includes all information shown on a chemical label and more.  Different formats are used by different chemical companies.

Let’s see how well you remember those lab safety symbols!

Fire Safety (Flammable) This symbol appears when care should be taken around open flames

Radioactive Safety This symbol appears when radioactive materials are used.

Explosive Safety This symbol appears when the misuse of chemical could cause an explosion.

Poison Safety This symbol appears when poisonous substance are used.

Corrosive Living tissue as well as equipment are destroyed on contact with these chemical.

Eye Safety This symbol appears when a danger to the eyes exist. Safety goggles should be worn when the symbol appears.
