Residential Schools 1840 – First residential schools 1884 – Compulsory attendance 1948 – Compulsory attendance ended 1968 – Dep't of Indian Affairs took sole control over residential school system

Society for the Advancement of Excellence in Education Rationale: Poor educational success rates for aboriginal students  2003, Canada West Foundation report: 75% of aboriginal students dropped out of high school SAEE Study: Examine school level factors that are associated with positive achievement for aboriginal students. Method: Case study of 10 schools whose aboriginal students made significant progress.

Sharing our Success Research questions  What do schools, where Aboriginal students are experiencing success, have in common?  What practices and characteristics appear to promote success?  What can be learned from these sites that can be translated to other situations?  What are the implications for policy and practice?

Exercise Get into groups of 8. As a group you will be gathering information on the pattern categories. Decide who is going to research which category. Break into category groups.  Read about the patterns identified in your category  Summarize the key concepts in your pattern category. Go back to main group and share the information from each category. Create a poster that summarizes the key concepts from the report.
