U NIFORMS OF THE R EVOLUTIONARY WAR By: Megan

A MERICAN UNIFORMS  Brown was the official color of Continental army. But it soon changed as the years went by, to red, blue, or brown.  At the beginning of the war, uniform companies said the 13 colonies should wear unorganized uniforms.  The Minute Men would usually have to supply their own guns and they had no uniforms.  Blue facings (white button holes): North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia  Red facings: Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia  White facings: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut  Buff facings: New York, New Jersey

B RITISH  They were called lobster backs or red coats because of the red uniforms.  The uniforms identify the rank and position of the soldier.  Loyalist usually wore their own civilian clothes, but some wanted to wear a blue or red coat.  They also wore headgear of bearskin caps, leather caps or tricorne hats depending on whether the troops were grenadiers, light infantry or battalion company men.
