Authoritarian Governments  Also known as totalitarian governments 1. Provides the LEAST citizen influence 2. Government has absolute or unlimited power 3. Citizens have no individual freedoms (controlled and censored)

Dictatorship ▬ Leader wears military uniforms and takes power through brutal force ▬ Elections, if held, are not conducted fairly (100% of popular vote)

Dictatorship Former dictator of Iraq: Saddam Hussein Current dictator of Cuba: Fidel Castro

Monarchy ▬ Leader is part of royal family and inherits power

Monarchy Former King George III of England Current Queen Elizabeth of England

Oligarchy: ▬ Small group of leaders are determined by wealth or social position ▬ The majority of citizens are not members of the powerful group

Oligarchy  Robber barons in the US

Democratic Governments 1. Provides the MOST citizen influence 2. Government has to listen to the people and hear their opinions 3. The people get to VOTE on things like who will be the president, if a new casino should be built, etc.

Direct Democracy ▬ Every person in a society that can legally vote votes on an issue. ▬ Example: people in Maryland voted FOR a new casino to be built next to M&T Bank Stadium

Representative Democracy ▬ We vote FOR people who will make decisions for us. ▬ This is because the government would be TOO slow if everyone voted on everything ▬ Example: In 2012, the American public voted for Barack Obama as President.
