Aim: Who is Tita and how does her world revolve around food? Do Now: 1. What does food mean to you? How would you describe your relationship with food? 2. Can you think of a memory you have that is attached to food?

“… when she was still in my great-grandmother’s belly her sobs were so loud that even Nacha, the cook, who was half-deaf, could hear them easily.” p. 8 What is Magical Realism ? A style of writing where the magical, supernatural, mythical elements mix with the realistic world. Writers don’t create supernatural, modern worlds; they simply reveal the magical elements in it. The two world mix seamlessly as one. Famous examples include the novels, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garciz Marquez, A Universal History of Infamy by Jorge Luis Borges and Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. Some films you may have seen that utliize this style inclue Pan’s Labyrinth, Amelie, Midnight in Paris and recently, Birdman. What are some other examples of Magical Realism as we read through Chapter 1?

“You know perfectly well that being the youngest daughter means you have to take care of me until the day I die.” p. 10 What is Tita’s fate – What is Tita’s future? Because of this circumstance in her life, how does food help her? How does this explain how Tita was crying even before she was born?
