How would you describe the 6 kingdoms of classification?
The Six Kingdoms Protista Plantae Fungi Animalia Archaebacteria Eubacteria
In the Beginning of classification All living things were in the Plantae or Animalia Kingdom.
Plantae Kingdom Vary in size & form Are multi-cellular eukaryotic organisms. Eukaryotic organism’s cells have nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Usually green b/c of photosynthesis (food from the sun). A producer Ex. Giant Sequoias
Animalia Kingdom Complex multicellular eukaryotic organisms. Eukaryotic organism’s cells have nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Have nervous systems Can move about Respond to their environment Are missing cell walls & chloroplast It is a consumer
Fungi Kingdom Started as plants…but no photosynthesis! Absorb nutrients from surroundings after breaking them down with digestive juices. An eukaryotic organisms and a consumer. Eukaryotic organism’s cells have nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. Death Cap (Amanita phalloides) Ex. Mold, mushrooms
Next Came… The Protista kingdom b/c Euglena were discovered.
Protista Kingdom Called protists Not plants…not animals Most are single-celled (some muliti-celled). Evolved from ancient bacteria 2 billion years ago. Are also eukaryotic organisms. Ex. Algae, euglena, paramecium, giant kelp
Lastly… The two Kingdoms of Bacteria: 1)Archaebacteria 2)Eubacteria pneumonia
All bacteria are single cell prokaryotes. Prokaryotic organisms do not have nuclei
Archaebacteria Kingdom Been on Earth 3 billion years Archae means “ancient” Live in harsh conditions like hot springs. Ex. The yellow and orange rings around hot springs.
Eubacteria Kingdom Germs Live in soil, water and human body. Causes milk to become yogurt. Causes ear, sinus infections, and pneumonia
Bacteria Divide and Multiply
What about viruses? Not true cells Uses the host to grow Ex. The flu, West Nile West Nile
So, what can you tell me about the six kingdoms of classification?
