3 CIFS Purpose To assist teachers in creating standard- based curriculum, and to develop and provide to schools high quality resources and model curriculum in order to reduce the achievement gap and provide a 21 st Century education for all students

4 CIFS Serves Stakeholders Statewide All teachers and schools –Public schools and teachers –Charter school schools and teachers –Alternative schools (public and private) and teachers –Private schools and teachers –Home school students and parents

5 CIFS Provides the Statewide Framework for Instruction Common Curriculum Goals: describe the course of study (curriculum) used in all Oregon school districts Content Standards: Define what students are expected to know and be able to do Grade Level Expectations: K-2 Foundations and 3-CIM Grade-level Standards

6 Common Curriculum Goals Grade level expectations that are high but attainable CIM Content so important that all students should know and be able to demonstrate. StandardsInstructional Frameworks Benchmarks

7 CIFS Provides Standards-based Curriculum Support –reading –writing –mathematics –science –social sciences –the arts –second languages –instructional technology –physical education

8 CIFS Communicates with Teachers Standards newspaper sent to every teacher in the state each year since 1997 All standards documents posted on ODE website at: Teaching and Learning to Standards published each year since 2000 On-line web site provides instructional resources tied directly to standards

9 CIFS Supports the Quality Education Model Schools identified as low performing on the Oregon school report card or as not making Adequate Yearly Progress for two consecutive years may request a diagnostic review

10 CIFS Ensures Accountability and Safety in all Public Schools An annual assurance process ensures that all 198 school districts are in compliance with respect to the statutory requirements for Public Elementary and Secondary Schools CIFS monitors school districts’ compliance with standards for school improvement (Division 20), school governance (Division 21), and standards for elementary and secondary schools (Division 22), and provides technical assistance when requested or necessary

11 CIFS Supports Federal Initiatives and NCLB $85 million in federal grant funds are distributed to school districts to improve student achievement and improve teacher quality –Reading First, Title IB –Teacher Quality, Title IIB –Educational Technology, Title IID –Charter Schools
