Significant Contributors in Counseling, Human Services, and Dietetics

James Lind James Lind discovered the use of fruits as a cure for scurvy. After early observations, he began to feed 12 scurvy patients different foods and found that the patients eating citrus fruits recovered much faster than those given other foods.

Ellen Swallow Richards She opened the door for women to pursue science education careers and is the ultimate pioneer in the field of home economics.

James Cattell James Cattell influenced the approach to study mental processes. He was concerned with human abilities such as the time it took subjects to perform acts as naming objects of colors. His early work also studied the affect of drugs on simple mental processes.

Anna Y. Reed and Eli Weaver They established counseling services based upon the concept of Social Darwinism.

E.G. Williamson He developed a theory that each individual had traits or interests, and aptitudes that combined to form their overall personality;

Carl Pfeiffer He made major contributions to the nutritional management of schizophrenia and the research and treatment of biochemical imbalances.

Doris Callaway The first nutritional scientist to study the dietary needs of healthy people under controlled conditions.
