3.3 Radiation Can heat be transferred from the Sun to us through conduction and convection? What is radiation? No! Conduction and convection cannot transfer heat through vacuum space. Heat from the Sun is transferred to the Earth by radiation.

3.3 Radiation Radiation is the process that transfers heat from one place to another by means of electromagnetic waves.  travels at the speed of light.  can travel through a vacuum. The transfer of heat by radiation

3.3 Radiation  All objects emit infrared radiation.  Hotter objects emit radiation of more energy.  The internal energy of an object increases when it absorbs the radiation.  Most energy emitted from the radiant heater is transferred to us by infrared radiation. radiant heater

3.3 Radiation Absorption and emission of radiation Solar panels are painted black. Black and dark surfaces are good absorbers of radiation.

3.3 Radiation Light-coloured shiny surfaces are poor absorbers of radiation. We wear light- coloured clothes on a hot day. White fuel tanks minimize heat absorption. White houses keep the insides cool. Simulation: Absorption of radiation

3.3 Radiation Black and dark surfaces are good emitters of radiation. Car radiators are painted black to facilitate heat loss through radiation.

3.3 Radiation Light-coloured shiny surfaces are poor emitters of radiation. A shiny kettle keeps water warm. Aluminium foil keeps the hot dog warm. Light-coloured hot air balloons can save fuel. Simulation: Emission of radiation
