When dealing with difficult behaviour - What works?

The best way to change someone else’s behaviour is to change the way you behave…..

It’s easy to make excuses for the way children behave – You may feel that children: Have emotional problems Have specific medical conditions Are economically deprived Have Special Educational Needs Have had some pretty negative experiences Don’t make excuses, but you can…

Work hard to develop positive and meaningful relationships Have positive regard for all children Label the act not the child Encourage children to take greater responsibility for what they do

Listen to children Help them to develop a more positive self- esteem Build on success Share a laugh and a joke with them

Take advantage of the unexpected Smile Remain calm Don’t be hostile or aggressive Don’t take things personally

Be Assertive Communicate needs and wants openly, honestly and clearly Have a plan Have positive expectations about you ability to manage tricky behaviour – you can do it! Be consistent and fair

Offer children alternatives and use more effective consequences Support and expect support from other members of staff – Don’t be afraid to ask for or offer help Be aware of your body language and personal space

Don’t get too bogged down with problems – this can sometimes be counter productive Remain focussed Ask the children for help Have fun

What leads to a confrontation?

What do we do when dealing With Confrontations?

Confrontation Management DO: remain controlled. keep calm. Talk quietly but firmly with clear directions. Keep talking. Call for help. Remove any audience. Keep at a safe distance.

Confrontation Management: DON’T use confrontational body language. Engage in prolonged or exaggerated eye contact. Use confrontational or provocative language. Use physical intervention - unless anybody is at risk of serious harm.

“ To keep doing the same thing over and over again and expecting change is a form of insanity” Bill Clinton

On the other hand we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish.
