Do Now On your “Do Now” sheet - List 2 – 3 “things” you know about cells.

What is a cell? Collection of living matter enclosed by a barrier that separates the cell from its surroundings Basic unit of all forms of life.

Proper Microscope Technique 1.Stage at lowest point 2.Lowest objective 3.Place slide on stage 4.While looking through the eyepiece, move stage up until you see something 5.Use fine focus. You shouldn’t have to move the course adjustment knob again.

Cell Theory 1. All living things are made of cells.

Cell Theory 2. Cells are the basic units of life

*

Cell Theory 3. All cells come from existing cells

Many Scientists Contributed to the Cell Theory

Robert Hooke Hooke is said to be one of the greatest experimental scientists of the 17 th century.

Discovered first compound microscope

.. I could exceedingly plainly perceive it to be all perforated and porous, much like a Honey-comb, but that the pores of it were not regular.... these pores, or cells,... were indeed the first microscopical pores I ever saw, and perhaps, that were ever seen, for I had not met with any Writer or Person, that had made any mention of them before this... Responsible for giving the cell its name

Anton van Leeuwenhoek Inspired by Hooke Made some of the most important discoveries in Biology

Made over 50 simple microscopes. Showed much more details than previous microscopes.

" In the mouth of one of the old men, Leeuwenhoek found "an unbelievably great company of living animalcules, a-swimming more nimbly than any I had ever seen up to this time. The biggest sort... bent their body into curves in going forwards... Moreover, the other animalcules were in such enormous numbers, that all the water... seemed to be alive." 1 st to look at Bacteria in our mouth

1 st to look at blood; found Red Blood Cells

1 st to examine their drinking water under the microscope; found TONS of small swimming organisms (protists)

Matthias Schleiden Studied law; his hobby was Botany (study of plants) Prior to Schleiden, everyone studied plants based off of physical characteristics; he use a microscope.

1 st to recognize cells in plants; he determined that plants are made up of cells

Theodor Schwann -Studied animals -Discovered that animal tissue is made up of cells

Rudolf Virchow Doctor All cells come from pre-existing cells

Eyepiece Arm Stage Coarse Adjustment Fine Focus Base Body Tube Revolving Nosepiece Objectives Stage Clips Diaphragm Light

Proper Microscope Techniques 1.Hold the microscope with two hands. - One on the arm, one on the base

Proper Microscope Techniques 2. Put the microscope in the middle of the table, with the arm facing toward you.

Proper Microscope Techniques 3. Watch for Cords!

Proper Microscope Techniques 4. Storage - Lowest objective - Stage high - Bag

Magnification of the Eyepiece X Magnification of the Objective = Total Magnification Example: 10 x 40 = 400

Preparing a Wet Mount

Microscope Drawings 1.Draw what you see 2.Draw the entire field of view 3.Title 4.Total Magnification 5.Color and labels
