Points, Lines and Rays G4.4M.C1.PO1 I can draw and describe the relationships between points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles including parallelism and perpendicularity.

The following is a line that goes on forever in both directions. How do you know? There are arrows at the ends of the line. You can add as many points to the line as you like, but as long as it goes on forever in both directions, IT IS STILL A LINE!

What would you have to do to make this line a line segment? Replace the arrows with endpoints. Endpoints create the starting and ending place of the line segment.

Now take the line segment and make it a ray. What would you change? Replace one endpoint with an arrow.

You can add as many points as you like to a ray. It will remain a ray, as long as one end goes on forever and the other has an endpoint. I’m still a RAY!!!

If you take two rays and connect the endpoints, what will you create? ray endpoint An angle! The shared endpoint is called a vertex.

What’s the difference? Line Line SegmentRay a straight path goes on forever in at least one direction no endpoints has at least one endpoint two endpoints

Parallel lines are in the same plane, an equidistance apart, and NEVER intersect. same distance apart here and HERE!!

Now take one of the lines and rotate 90 degrees. These are perpendicular lines. They create four right angles.

Lines that cross but do NOT create right angles, are called intersecting lines.

Parallel, Intersecting or Perpendicular? Intersecting

Parallel, Intersecting or Perpendicular? Perpendicular Even though the lines don’t cross in this picture, they would if you extended the lines. Remember, a line goes on forever in both directions.
