INJECTORS BLM SYSTEM: PROGRESS REPORT Christos Zamantzas on behalf of the BLM team. MSWG 28/08/2015
Overview Status of the development Status of the Beam Loss Monitoring system upgrade in LINAC4, PSB and PS w.r.t. Cabling Detectors Supports Electronics Installation Documentation Budget
DEVELOPMENT 28/08/2015
Development Using the prototype installations at PSB and PS we were able to: identify and solve issues in the analogue circuitry of the acquisition card in terms of leakage current, offset, temperature dependence etc. recently all modules have been sent back to the manufacturer and modified the input stage. develop and validate the firmware and software recently updated the firmware to control better the start-up procedure of the analogue circuitry. recently updated the FESA class to provide both raw and normalised to Gy/s measurements. develop and test in real conditions the continuous connectivity check under development a continuous quality check of the complete chain from the detector to the processing electronics. Still several parts need to be addressed in the firmware: most notably: loading of settings/thresholds, system status information and interlocking.
Prototype installation PSB One complete rack with all electronics has been installed covers all L2 locations in the PSB ring (32 ch.) and some channels in 4L1 hotspot (4 ch.) Advanced versions of Firmware and Software available. Direct Ethernet connection to each acquisition module available for detailed analysis and debugging. 2 μs samples continuously Through FESA class, system provides the ‘evolution’ data synchronised with the basic period. 1 ms samples during beam presence Have already been used in a couple of MDs. OP has a first version of its fixed display.
LINAC4 28/08/2015
LINAC4 1/3 Detectors have been defined and available Will use LHC type ICs, Exception at 50 MeV to be equipped with a Diamond Supports for the machine line (+ some spare) have been designed and produced Some have already been installed The remaining are scheduled from Nov Found solution for the non-conformity issue not seen earlier during integration check Supports for the transfer line are pending Meeting in September with Alessandra and the integration team to clarify the position of channels Based on that outcome, we will know if we can re-use the current support design or we will need a new one.
LINAC4 2/3 Majority of the cables have been installed (CKB50 type) All cables in the tunnel are enclosed in a metallic tray Missing installation of one channel issue with crossing a wall waiting for decision from EN/EL-BE/OP Assembly of connectors of signal cables Not done - we need first the supports installed this blocks us also from installing all other electronics in the rack. EN/EL agreed to go for partial assembly first assemble all connectors in the surface and then batches in the tunnel following the installation.
LINAC4 3/3 All electronics produced, tested and ready Installation planned for November Firmware and Software Ready for measurements Interlocking abilities Q Specifications agreed Budget OK
PSB 28/08/2015
PSB 1/2 Detectors: 75 ICs and 32 FICs - all procured. 8 Diamonds - to be procured this year. also spare detectors for all types will be available Cabling list request have been updated with new channels and spare cables for all locations Ring: 32 ch. w/ FIC, TL: 43 ch. w/ IC and BI: 8 ch. W Diamonds Spare channels: 16 in the Ring and 7 in the Transfer Lines Support’s design for Ring L3 positions (FICs) is complete Waiting for integration team to give also the ok before we go into production. A prototype will be tested in the machine next week. Supports for the new injection section (ICs and Diamonds) is complete Design will circulate for approval soon. Supports design for all remaining transfer line detectors (ICs) has not started Next week first try in collecting all data/photos. We expect it to be very complicated due to topology and space.
PSB Supports for FIC
PSB Supports for new Injection line
PSB 2/2 Three new racks have been assigned positions and requested for installation. All electronics for the ring and BI line produced, tested and ready for installation Electronic modules for the ejection lines in planned for the next production to start at Q Specifications are agreed. Defined and agreed naming convention for all channels with quality assurance team with the exception of Observation system Budget is OK.

PS 28/08/2015
PS 1/3 Detectors: 16 Diamonds procured 160 ICs are in production. Delivery expected in All cabling is planned for LS2 we will ask if possible to install earlier the Diamond connections during WTS 2015/2016. Supports: Design for the ring detectors (ICs and Diamonds) has started. Prototype has been tested on a spare magnet. Next step: design office for the production documents Transfer lines have not been considered yet.
PS Ring Support Prototype
PS 2/3 Specifications: After providing additional information to Rende on the specifications, he ‘approves’ current proposal with some modifications. Will meet again after OP’s internal discussion. Specifically for the OASIS connection in the legacy system the signal of all ACEMs is split and one part is send to OASIS acquisition cards and the other to the on-board integrators. proposal is in the future to provide 1 ms digital samples directly to an OASIS class. Specifications document will be amended and redistributed
PS 3/3 Budget is at large part ok LIU, CONS and BE are all contributing BE: already paid LIU: 250 kCHF missing - Malika & Rhodri are discussing this last part CONS: request made, pending approval in October 2015 Estimated budget required: split by project Estimated budget required: yearly apportionment
Thank you
