Scope With the ability to genetically control and amend natural systems to produce materials, there are immense implications for the penetration of biotechnology across traditional industries whose products are essentially molecular– pharmaceuticals or chemicals, for example. In the future these industries will increasinglybecome life science industries whose products are essentially bio- molecular,and they will contribute to a growing bioeconomy in the UK; a bioeconomy that promises energy sufficiency, environmental sustainability, health benefits, and long-term economic growth.

1.65 ‘…In the life sciences sector, the Government will work to improve market signalling by bringing companies and educators together, through Cogent, the Sector Skills Council, to ensure that educators provide the skilled individuals the sector needs to grow.’ Ambition 4 A more educated workforce that is the most flexible in Europe ‘This action will form part of a package of measures Cogent will present to Government, by spring 2011, to ensure biology training at all levels meets employer needs.’
