Adaptations of Plants & Animals Ms.Possesky Third Grade Life Science

Objectives Students will learn to: South Carolina Standards: Identify the physical and behavioral adaptations of plants and animals Identify how a change in the environment could effect an organism’s adaptation South Carolina Standards: 3-2.2, 3-2.4

What do you know about Adaptations? What is an adaptation? What is an example of plant adaptation? What is an example of animal adaptation? How does the environment alter certain adaptations?

Adaptations of Plants Many plants use sunlight and carbon dioxide to create food for themselves through a process called photosynthesis A few plants are actually carnivorous and eat small bugs and organisms Several plants also excrete poisonous oils to protect themselves from other predators

Adaptations of Plants Photosynthesis Carnivorous Poisonous Oils

Adaptations of Animals Thick fur coats allow animals to be able to hibernate during the cold months A lot of animals have hard outer shells to protect them from their predators Many animals use camouflage to escape from their predators

Animal Adaptations Thick Fur Outer Shell Camouflage

How the environment effects an organism’s Adaptation If an organism’s surroundings change, their adaptations to their previous environment would not be useful anymore Plants and Animals live in certain environment because they have characteristics to survive in that environment Example: A deer is used to living in forest areas but with all of the industry being built by humans they lose their habitats and their adaptations slowly become use less

Review What is an example of a plant adaptation? ________________ photosynthesis What is an example of an animal adaptation? _________________ Thick fur Why is it important for the environment not to go through drastic changes? ______________________________________ Organism’s Adaptations aren’t useful when there is a drastic change in the environment.
