Step by Step Setup l Get a good aerial photograph –NRCS Office

Step by Step Setup l Get a soils map –NRCS office –List of soil descriptions

Step by Step Setup l A grid to count acres is helpful

Step by Step Setup l Mark aerial photo with physical resources –water –shade –working facilities –roads –lanes –property lines –roads

Step by Step Setup l Using a soils map, mark the major soil changes on the aerial photo l These can become your permanent fences

Step by Step Setup l Draw around crop or existing field boundaries if they already exist l Identify areas with different forages

Step by Step Setup l Divide the farm according to existing water sources. l This should be a basic grazing system

Step by Step Setup l Fields should each have water l Divide fields according to productivity l Have enough subdivisions to begin to rotationally graze

Step by Step Setup l How Many Paddocks? –(Days of rest / Days of grazing) + 1 – Example: (30/5) + 1 = 7 l In most cases 8 subdivisions is enough l May need adjusting after experience is gained

Step by Step Setup - Advanced l Work to get shade and water in each paddock l Try to limit days on pasture to <7 days l Develop system of lanes to make it easy to move cattle

B FT. = $618.00

E FT PIPE + TANK = $711.00

F FT PIPE + TANK = $681.00

G FT PIPE + TANK = $659.00

Grazing Math l lb X 3% of Body Weight = 528 lb daily forage need l 4 inch grazing height x 200 lb/inch = 800 lb available forage l 800 available forage X 60% utilization = 480 lb usable forage

Conclusions l Need about 1 acre per day cool season forage and a little less for warm seasons l Plan for 3 acre paddocks cool season and 2 acre paddocks warm season
