 Talk about your Family in one sentence … (Family Value to yours, How they help you in your study, Is it very important to you, can you live separate of your family, your impression about your Family…….)

 Family is a group of people who are related by blood, marriage, or adoption, live together, are an economic unit, and bear and raise children.  Community is a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.

 Family and community are providing children with a sense of belonging and a unique identity.  Family is, or should be, a source of emotional support, warmth and nurturing, protection and security.  Family relationships and community provide children with a critical sense of being valued and with a vital network of historical linkages and social support.

 There are many political comments and differences on whether it takes a village or a family to raise a child.  Researchers are aware that a child need both a Family and community to reach to the optimal levels of development, so schools must seek to support and partner with both families and communities.

 Partnership refers to equal rights for & responsibilities of all three entities also, it imply that power bases are equal.  Margaret noted that children have needs, but that children are needed by families and communities. Children Families Communities

 Two keys sources of evidence that inform early childhood educators about the essential need for partnerships among the adults in a child’s life include developmental assets and the irreducible needs of children.  developmental assets: critical factors necessary for children’s healthy development.  irreducible needs: needs that are basic to children’s survival and optimal development.

Four External assets Support Empowerment Boundaries & Expectations Constructive use of time Four Internal assets Commitment to learning Positive Values Social competencies Positive identity Categories for developmental assets ** Child development is complex and is influenced by multiple internal and external determinants.

The irreducible needs of children  Ongoing nurturing relationships.  Physical protection, safety, and regulation.  Experiences that consider the individual differences of children.  Experiences that are developmentally appropriate.  Appropriate limits, predictable structure, and reasonable expectations  A stable, supportive community  Cultural continuity.
