Plot

Character Profiles Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lizzie is sixteen years old. She is Chris’s girlfriend, who doesn’t always see eye-to-eye with Tom. She is pretty, but can be quite bitchy at times. She is strong, both physically and emotionally, which comes across when she is fighting for her life. Lizzie’s character is a contrast of the usual stereotype of girls in horror films. Chris Chris is a stereotypical teenage boy. He is athletic, dressed in tracksuit bottoms and trainers. He is best friends with Tom and Lizzie is his girlfriend. He is usually the peace maker between them both. He is strong and courageous and very protective over Lizzie. Tom We don’t see much of Tom throughout the opening of the film. We find out he’s quite argumentative with Lizzie which can sometimes cause tension between him and Chris. He is less athletic and more of a bookworm.

Representation The character of Lizzie is a contrast of stereotypes within horror. Instead of being weak and vulnerable, Lizzie’s character will be strong - both physically and emotionally, and she will also fight for survival unlike what is normally presented in horror films. We want to create a different image of girls in horror films, and also by changing the representation of characters within the film, hopefully the audience will realise our film is not just a normal horror film - it has a twist. Chris’s character will be represented as a typical male within horror films - he will be strong, courageous, athletic and protective over Lizzie. We decided to make Chris’s character like this to lure the audience into a sense of security - they will expect a character like Chris’s to survive. Tom is not ever fully seen by the audience, making it scarier for them. We don’t really witness him as a character before he is taken over by the demon and so we don’t really get to know him as a character. When he is possessed by the demon we see his feet - hairy and dirty with long toe nails and cuts, to show the difference between his human self and his demon self.

Target Audience The target audience for our film will be an18-24 age group, and will be targeted at mainly males. We came to this conclusion after finding the graphs below. They show that the age group of is the most popular group to attend the cinema and also that more males watch horror films then girls. We intend the target audience to be British because our film has a British feel to it as it will mainly be set in a National Heritage site-Castle Ring, it would also be appreciated more by the British audience as it may relate to an individual in some way. The Target audience will be C2 (Skilled working class), D (unskilled working class) and E (economically inactive). Information found:

Institutions

Language We will have a non-diegetic soundtrack throughout the film. The music is quite fast paced, representing a few different things; their heartbeats and them running. It will also help to build up suspense. There will also be diegetic sound effects, like screaming, twigs snapping and heavy breathing to make it more realistic and hopefully scary too. The types of camera shots we would like to include are; -Panning shots -Following shots -Stationary at the side shots -Zooms -Point of view shots -High-angle shot We also are going to include a voice over of whispering of Biblical quotes. Within the opening of our horror film we will also include a lot of fades when it comes to the editing, to reinforce the genre.

Ideology “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”- This is the opening quotation from Revelations in the Bible. It will be shown in writing, in between flashbacks to some of the characters running. The opening of the film relates to demonic possession and we think that this quote ties in quite nicely, talking about both hell and death. Iconography to support genre by linking physical characteristics to the development of demonic possession, for example the change in appearance - red eyes, dirty and cut and also not doing usual human things like blinking.

Narrative We will be contradicting Todorov’s theory of equilibrium because the start of our horror film is disequilibrium to fit the horror genre and throw the audience in at the deep end. On the other hand, we have accumulated Propp’s theory: Elizabeth (Lizzie) = Hero Tom = Hidden Villain/Victim Chris = Helper/Victim We will also include Levi Strauss’s theory of “binary oppositions” by having Good vs. Evil; Lizzie and Chris vs. the demon that is possessing Tom.

Genre It is a British Horror film The film will be British because it will be filmed in England, with British actors. The production and distribution companies we have chosen will also be British. The location of the film is Castle Ring which is a Nation Heritage site. The film will be recognised as horror because we will be filming during the hours of 1600 and 1800 during the Winter, which means the natural light will be limited, therefore creating a scary atmosphere. We will have diegetic sound effects, like screams and twigs snapping, that sort of thing. We will also have an original non- diegetic soundtrack throughout the film to create a sense of fear and tension throughout the opening. The type of camera techniques we use will also add to the feeling of horror - we will talk more about these later.
