Statistics. Our objective today: Learn about statistics and why they are important Explore how we can gain information about a population by examining.
Types of Data When we are interested in finding out more about something, we start asking questions about it. Some questions have answers that are words.
Math Reflections Looking at Data Organizing and Interpreting Data How are a table, a line plot and a bar graph alike?
In what situations do we use each type of graph?
Why do we analyze data?  It is important to analyze data because you need to determine the extent to which the hypothesized relationship does or does.

DATA ABOUT US Because people are naturally curious about themselves and others, many people are interested in information from the census. Of course, collecting data from every household is a huge task. You often hear people making statements about the results of surveys. For example, what does it mean when reports say the average middle- school student has our people in his or her family, or watches three house of television on a weekday?

You will learn how to… Distinguish between categorical data and numerical data and identify which graphs and statistics may be used to represent each kind of data Conduct data investigations by posing questions, collecting and analyzing data, and making interpretations to answer questions Represent distributions of data using line plots, bar graphs, stem-and-leaf plots, and coordinate graphs Compute the mean, median, mode, or range of the data Choose the most appropriate statistical measures (mean, median, mode, range, etc.) to describe a distribution of data Develop strategies for comparing distributions of data

Categorical vs. Numerical Data What is data? Categorize survey topics as categorical or numerical.

Vocabulary Data- Information. Data- Information. Categorical Data- Information about categories. Categorical Data- Information about categories. Numerical Data- Information about numbers. Numerical Data- Information about numbers.

Categorical or Numerical (or quantitative)? categorical-data.html categorical-data.html

Categorical vs. Numerical Data Categorical Data- Information about categories. Categorical Data- Information about categories. Examples: Examples: What is your favorite kind of soda? What kind of pets do you have? What is your favorite basketball team? Numerical Data- Information about numbers. Numerical Data- Information about numbers. Examples: Examples: How many people like 7-Up? How many pets do you have? How many hours of TV do you watch in a week?

Categorical Data Numerical Data Which one is it? In which month you were born? What is your favorite pet? How many pets do you have? Who is your favorite author? How much time do you spend watching television in a day? What’s your highest score in the game? How many movies have you watched in the past week? specific labels/ categories usually not numbers Counts/measures Now come up with 3 questions per type of data and write down on your chart.

HW- DAU Pg 23 Tell whether the answers to the questions are numerical or categorical data. 14. What is your height in centimeters? 15. What is your favorite musical group? 16. What would you like to do after the graduate from high school? 17.What kind(s) of transportation do you use to get to school? 18. How much time do you spend doing homework? 19. On a scale of 1 to 7, with 7 being outstanding and 1 being poor, how would you rate the cafeteria food?
