Stem and Leaf Plots Please view this tutorial and answer the follow-up questions on loose leaf to turn in to your teacher.

Stem-and-Leaf Plot Basics A stem-and-leaf plot is a graphical representation of data where the ones digits are listed as “leaves” off the stem and the numbers to the left of the ones are listed in the “stems” column. The “leaves” are always listed in order from least to greatest.

Example Stems Leaves represents the number 72. represents Notice that the “leaves” are ordered from least to greatest!

Making a Stem-and-Leaf Plot Always organize your data from least to greatest! – An easy way to do this is to enter your data into a list then hit STAT and 2:SortA(

Making a Stem-and-Leaf Plot Put your information in order from least to greatest

Making a Stem-and-Leaf Plot Decide on a starting value for your stems. Since 49 is your lowest value, 4 would be a good choice for the first stem. Since 86 is your highest value, continue your stems sequentially (counting by ones) up to

Making a Stem-and-Leaf Plot Even though there is no value in the 50s, you still need to include the 5 in the stems!

Making a Stem-and-Leaf Plot Begin entering your data into the stem-and-leaf plot by placing the ones digits in the appropriate leaf

Making a Stem-and-Leaf Plot There are no leaves in the 5 row because there are no values in the 50s. Do NOT put a zero if there are no numbers in a row! There are two 0’s in the 6 row because there are two values of 60 in our data set. There are two 3’s in the 6 row because there are two values of 63 in the data set

Making a Stem-and-Leaf Plot Complete the stem- and-leaf plot by filling in the leaves using the remaining information

Making a Stem-and-Leaf Plot You should have gotten the stem-and-leaf plot on the right

Follow-Up Questions The following are player’s ages from a soccer team: 33, 28, 32, 27, 27, 24, 26, 24, 19, 30, 42, 31, 30, 24, 29, 23, 30 1)Construct a stem and leaf plot of the data above. Please submit the stem and leaf plot to your teacher. It does not need to be submitted on the wikispace. (Note: Do not click to move on to the next slide until you finish this question.)

Follow-Up Questions Using the stem and leaf plot above, answer the following questions. Submit these answers on the Wikispace. 2)Why are there the three fives after the 9’s stem? 3)What does the six after the 12’s stem mean? 4)Why is there a blank space in the 7’s stem?
